Tiles construction process is ancient, the main ingredients of ceramic tile and its general manufacturing process has not changed that much for centuries. Ceramic and porcelain tiles unite earth and fire, they’re created from natural materials extracted from the earth, shaped into tiles and fired in kilns at extremely high temperatures.

Generally, the process begins by mining the raw materials (clay and minerals), the mixture is then mixed and blended to create semi fine powder, adding water to the powder will form a slurry mud like material that is dried in a large dryer to create a fine clay powder. Next, the manufacturer will press and form the clay into tile shapes creating what’s called a green tile, and then the green tile will enter another drying process to remove some moisture. Depending on the type of tile being created, glaze liquid will be created, normally prepared from frit and colored dyes, and then applied to the green tile. Finally, the formed shapes will be fired in kilns at a very high temperature creating beautiful, durable and waterproof tiles that we can use.

Ceramic tiles are beautiful flooring option, it can be categorized into two main types, glazed and unglazed, and both are created from natural products. Each type has its own characteristics and usage. Glazed Ceramic Tiles: Consist of 2 layers, body and bisque. The bisque layer is fired before the tile enter the kiln creating the tile glaze, which causes permanent physical and chemical changes to the tile giving it different characteristics compared to the unglazed ceramic tiles. Glazed ceramic tiles has non-porous, impermeable surface making it more stain resistant and easier to clean which means it’s more suitable option for active areas of your home

Unglazed Ceramic Tiles: Consists of 2 layers, body and bisque. The bisque layer has no additional surface application or glaze. Unglazed ceramic tiles are solid colored all the way through. Typically unglazed tiles are more dense and durable than glazed tiles making it a preferred option in areas where of heavy activity and wearability is a concern indoors or outdoors.
