Engineered Hardwood Floors and Solid Hardwood Floors
How Hardwood is made? What is the difference between solid hardwood floors and engineered hardwood floors? Here is a brief that summarizes the production process and the main characteristics and differences between solid and engineered hardwood flooring.
How Hardwood Floors are Made?
Solid wood floors are one solid piece of wood that has tongue and groove sides. Engineered Wood Floors are manufactured from thin sheets or piles of wood that are laminated on top of each other but in the opposite directions (cross-ply construction) to create dimensionally stable and water-resistant planks that hold better against moisture and humidity than solid hardwood.
Hardwood Flooring Types
Solid hardwood is a traditional version of hardwood floors made from solid wide planks of real wood that are fitted together using tongue and groove method. Solid hardwood floors are more expensive and durable than engineered hardwood floors. It lasts longer, but it’s vulnerable to humidity and warping; hence, they are used in nail down installations and are not recommended for installations below ground level or directly over a concrete slab.
Being a natural product, solid hardwood flooring is sensitive. It will expand and contract in response to seasonal changes in moisture. Hence, it’s important to leave proper expansion area around the perimeter and to acclimate the wood prior to installation. This will help assure a lasting, beautiful application. Solid hardwood planks are much thicker than engineered hardwood planks with an added wear layer. This extra thickness allows for repeated refinishing and sanding, which will help maintain and extend the life of your solid wood floors. It’s recommended to use solid wood flooring in the ground floor.
Engineered hardwood floors are generally manufactured with a number of thin sheets or piles of different species of wood or sometimes synthetic reinforced underlayment that are laminated together and covered with natural looking wood lumber veneer that gives these wood planks its beautiful look. Normally these wood sheets or piles are stacked on top of each other in the opposite direction, which is called cross-ply construction to help create hardwood floors that are dimensionally stable and less vulnerable to temperature, moisture and humidity changes. Cross-ply construction allows the plies to counteract each other, which will stop the plank from growing or shrinking in response to changes in temperature, moisture and humidity.
Engineered hardwood planks are water-resistant and holds better against moisture and humidity than solid hardwood, some other advantages are versatility and usability. Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed over concrete slabs in your basement and anywhere else in your beautiful home, but unlike solid Hardwood, they can’t be sanded and refinished regularly depending on the thickness of the top wood lumber veneer layer, some floors can be sanded once or twice in a life time.
